Q1: What kind of courses does MCU Mandarin Studies and Culture Center provide?

A: There are regular group class, one-on-one class, online group class and online one-on-one customized class.

Q2: What is the tuition fee for regular group class?

A: The tuition fee for regular group class is NTD 28,000 per semester. (The textbook fee and insurance fee are not included.)

Q3: What is the tuition fee for one-on-one individual class?

A: The tuition fee for one-on-one individual class is NTD 12,000 for 20 lessons. Each session is NTD 600.

Q4: What is the tuition fee for online class?

A: The online courses are online group class and online one-on-one customized class. The class size of online group class is 1 to 4 students.

Q5: What is the application condition for regular group class?

A: Applicants who are over 18 years old or interested in studying Mandarin are eligible

Q6: What is regular group class?

A: The regular group class is offered in 4 semesters per year, which begin in January, April, July and October. Each semester is 3 months. The class is offered from 9:10 am to 12:00 every Monday to Friday, 3 hours per day, 15 hours per week. There are 12 weeks per semester and 180 hours of class in total. The teaching materials are “A Course in Contemporary Chinese” and other supplementary teaching materials. The class is taught at Jihe Complex and the class size is small, with no more than 15 students.

Q7: Is there an orientation for regular group class?

A: Yes, the orientation is held a week before the beginning of each semester and students will receive a notification of orientation from MSCC a month before the class begins.

Q8: What are the levels in regular group class?

A: There are Basic 1-2, Intermediate 1-4 and Advanced 1-2. (The levels will be adjusted depending on the numbers of students each semester.)

Q9: How can I know which level is suitable for me?

A: A written and oral test are conducted on the day of orientation to help students distinguish their Mandarin levels. (MSCC adjusts the classes to help students study at a suitable level during the first week.)

Q10: Can I take leave from a regular group class?

A: Yes, it’s acceptable. If students need to take leave, they should inform MSCC or their teacher. If they don’t inform them, it will be regarded as an absence. If they are over 20 minutes late for the class, it will be marked as one-hour absence. Excessive absences may affect the student’s VISA extension.

Q11: What is one-on-one class?

A: The class schedule of one-on-one class is more flexible and the class will be arranged based on students’ expected class schedule and learning target. Each semester is 20 sessions and the minimum of 2 sessions with teacher are required per time. Each session is 50 minutes plus 10 minutes break. Students should complete the class within 3 months once they begin.

Q12: What is online group class?

A: The online group class is conducted online with 1-4 students. As long as students have mobile phones or computers, they can study by remote teaching. The online teaching system is Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. The teaching material is “A Course in Contemporary Chinese”.

There are two models of online group class:

Q13: What is online one-on-one customized class?

A: The online one-on-one customized class is conducted online. As long as students have mobile phones or computers, they can study by remote teaching. The online teaching system is Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams and the teaching material will depend on the discussion between the student and the teacher. Each course is 20 hours and it should be completed within 3 months. Each session should be at least 1 hour. 

Q14: How can I apply for regular group class?

A: Please scan the following required documents and send them to mscc@mail.mcu.edu.tw to complete  the application.

  2. A copy of passport
  3. A proof of financial support with a bank statement of a minimum of USD2,000 issued within the past 3 months, or A copy of completed application form for Taiwan Scholarship, or Alien Residence Certificate (ARC)
  4. A proof of medical insurance with a valid period of at least 4 months or National Insurance Card from Taiwan (NHI) (Applicants without insurance, please register for MCU Student Insurance at the Orientation.)
  • The documents mentioned above are required to be in English or Chinese, If not, please attach a formal translation in English or Chinese.

After submitting the application, MSCC will review the documents within 1-3 days. After students are admitted, an admission letter will be issued and sent in PDF format to students by email.

Q17: How can I apply for a VISA?

A:  Students have to receive the admission letter from MSCC and prepare the required documents to submit to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in their country to apply for FR Visitor VISA with the purpose of studying Mandarin. After entering Taiwan, if students have stayed in Taiwan for more than 4 months already and are qualified, they may apply for ARC.

Q18:  Can I apply for ARC right after arriving in Taiwan?

A:  After arriving in Taiwan with language-study VISA, students are required to meet the following conditions to apply for ARC:

  1. Students who have studied in MSCC for more than 4 months and have an excellent performance and attendance record.
  2.  Students who have planned to study for the whole third semester, have completed the payment and have received the proof documents.

Students must apply for ARC two weeks prior to the expiration date of their VISA.

Q19:  How can I extend my VISA?

A:  Students are required to prepare the following documents to extend their VISA at the Immigration Office.

  1. Passport & Student ID Card
  2. Two copies of enrollment and attendance record from Mandarin Studies & Culture Center
  3. A proof of the receipt of the tuition fee

Q20: How can I apply for ARC?

A:  Please log into the website of Bureau of Consular Affairs to fill out the application for resident VISA in advance (https://visawebapp.boca.gov.tw).  After filling it out, please print it out and sign your name. Afterwards, please bring the printed form and the following documents to apply at Bureau of Consular Affairs.

  1. Enrollment, Attendance Record, Transcripts and Student ID Card of Mandarin Studies & Culture Center
  2. Study Plan (including learning motivation)
  3. Proof of financial support (with a balance of NTD 60,000 or more and a record of the funds transfer)
  4. Proof of medical check-up
  5. Two 2-inch photos
  6. Passport
  7. Proof of the receipt of the tuition fee for the coming semester
  8. Proof of rental tenancy

After receiving the resident VISA, please prepare the following documents to apply for ARC at the immigration office or online https://coa.immigration.gov.tw/coa-frontend/student/entry?lang=en

Q21: When can I apply for a work permit?

A: Students who have completed one year of formal Mandarin courses in Taiwan are eligible to apply.

Q22: How can I apply for a work permit?

A: Please prepare the following documents and apply online on the website of Workforce Development Agency.

  1. Passport, ARC and Student ID Card
  2. One year of transcripts of Mandarin courses (4 consecutive semesters)
  3. Proof of enrollment in study
  4. Proof of the receipt of the tuition fee for the coming semester
  5. Proof of the receipt of application fee

Q23: Is there any application fee for the work permit?

A: Yes, it’s required to transfer the application fee of NTD100 at the post office to the account name of “勞動部勞動力發展署聘僱許可收費專戶”, giro account number: 19058848.

Q24: Is there any restriction on Mandarin students working part time?

A: Students may not work over 20 hours per week.

Q25: Can I apply for the school dormitory?

A: Students who study in regular group class can apply for the school dormitory during the semester.

Q26: How much is the fee for the dormitory?

A: The dormitory fee is NTD 15,000 per semester for 3 months, not including the utility fees for electric and water. The Dormitory Superintendent collects the utility fee from students every month. The utility fees are shared by tenants.

Q27: Where is the dormitory located?

A: The school dormitory is an off-campus Jixian dormitory, which is located at No. 175 Jixian Road, Sanchong District. Students can take a 15~20-minute bus ride to arrive at Jihe Complex. There are Ubike, Carrefour, and a park nearby the dormitory. It’s a convenient area.

Q28: What is room types are available in the dormitory?

A: There are 3-person and 5-person rooms. MSCC will arrange dorm space based on the current vacancies. Students are not able to choose the room type.

Q29: Do I need to pay a deposit for the dormitory?

A: The dormitory deposit is NTD 7,000. Of this, NTD5,000 should be given to MSCC and it will be returned after submitting the check-out form. The other NTD2,000 should be given to the Dormitory Superintendent as a key deposit and it will be returned after returning the key without any damages to the dorm. The dormitory supervisor may deduct the last month of utility fee from the deposit.

Q30: Can I buy the school insurance?

A: Yes, you can. If students don’t buy any overseas medical insurance nor hold any health insurance status, they are required to inform MSCC to join the school insurance when submitting the application documents. (If students don’t want to join the school insurance, they are required to fill out a declaration form.)

Q31: How much is the school insurance?

A: The school insurance fee is NTD 2,025 for 3 months.

Q32: What is the school insurance?

A: The school insurance is basic medical insurance, which covers medical treatments and accidents.

Q33: Is there any scholarship to apply for studying Mandarin?

Q34: What are the scholarships for studying Mandarin?

A: MOFA Taiwan Scholarship (Mandarin is a prerequisite) & MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarship.

Q35: What are the differences between MOFA Taiwan Scholarship (Mandarin is a prerequisite) & MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarship?

A: The MOFA Taiwan Scholarship (Mandarin is a prerequisite) is open to students from countries having diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Students are required to complete one year of Mandarin course before studying for a degree in Taiwan.

MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is established to enhance exchanges between Taiwan and countries designated by the MOE by encouraging foreign students to study Mandarin in Taiwan.

Q36: Do students granted scholarship need to pay the tuition fee and dormitory fee?

A: Yes, it will be deducted from the scholarship monthly.

Q37: Can students granted scholarship apply for a work permit?

A: Scholarship students are not allowed to apply for a work permit during the period of their study of Mandarin.
